In this class we explore how the urge toward physical and spiritual perfectionism is common to many practitioners of yoga. When yogic teachings collide with the urge to be pure, faultless, and true, it is a veritable perfect storm. All too often, a yearning for purity, ingrained somewhere in the depths of our psyche, finds an outlet in yoga techniques—techniques that espouse cleanliness, equilibrium, and peace. For those raised in middle- to upper-class backgrounds there is a longing to be virtuous. Growing up Catholic, Baptist, or Presbyterian, we aspire to be praiseworthy, follow the rules, and live a moral life. How do we cope with the urge to live up to a grand ideal? How can we find peace in the midst of an imperfect world?

Personal Transformation

Underlying our teaching is that we do not do poses for the sake of the pose, but for the quality of attention within the pose. Through yoga postures, dharma study, guided meditation, the yoga of sound, somatic awareness and dream work this is a practice that allows for unique, personal transformation.

Prajna Yoga

Tias and Surya’s collaboration as a husband and wife team is remarkably fresh, innovative and inspiring. While Tias is more verbal and conceptual, Surya’s strength lies in her ability to touch the essence of each individual. They combine the magic of male and female energies, and their alchemy is transformative to students from so many different walks of life. Together they create a path that is at once wide open yet penetrating and progressive.

Be the Path

Prajna Yoga is a profound journey inward. We believe that yoga is a pathway that begins in the outer layers of body and mind and navigates inward to the mystical, subtle and rarely seen interior. We combine meditative practice with the power and grace of asana training.
